Where it all begins.[edit source]

The surface of the world of It Lurks Below. On world creation, some Cobblestone Cobblestone and Iron Ore Iron Ore usually spawns such that it is accessible straight from the surface. This layer does not refresh when using the World Book, and so it is advisable to not waste resources found on this layer. They are sold at the General Store General Store , but only in small quantities and buying from the store is cumbersome and costly. Trees are a sustainable resource of Wood Wood , granted you do not dig up the saplings and forget to replant them.

On the surface, there are two biomes: Normal surface and The Corruption of It. At night, monsters spawn around the surface. However, after you defeat Commander Vile Commander Vile , they will no longer spawn. On the other hand, there is a small chance that at any time an Invasion will happen, spreading IT's corruption and making your NPCs temporarily inaccessible.

Boss[edit source]

Commander Vile Commander Vile Commander Vile is the first boss in It Lurks Below. He is found in The Corruption of It biome on the surface. Defeating him is part of the Tutorial Quests.

Strategy[edit source]

  • Commander Vile is very difficult to outrun, but you can prepare a column to block him, and make a hole to safely shoot through.
  • This strategy works with Sword and Shield Sword and Shield and Dual Swords Dual Swords as well.
  • Using a Scroll of Blessing Scroll of Blessing may also help mitigate the danger.

Rewards[edit source]

Commander Vile drops a random quality weapon on death, proportional in strength to the player's level.

Dirt Layer icon.png

The first layer counting down, just below the Surface and above the Muddy Layer. Contains Cobblestone Cobblestone , which is used in crafting low level Runes, and Iron Ore Iron Ore , used for the Iron Armor. Since this layer does not refresh when using the World Book, it is advisable to not waste resources found on this layer. They are sold at the General Store General Store , but only in small quantities and buying from the store is cumbersome and costly.

Strategy[edit source]

Monsters here do not possess any special movement abilities and do not break blocks (on Normal Difficulty, that is). The most dangerous monsters in this layer are the Frost Imp Frost Imp and the Skeleton Skeleton . Frost imps fire ice projectiles that can sometimes stun-lock a player in place, leading them to a quick and frustrating death. Skeletons use a shotgun type weapon and inflict a very high amount of damage, especially at short range.

Blocks[edit source]

The most common block in this layer is Dirt Dirt , with a middle layer of Dirt Dirt and a background of nothing. There are also patches of Cobblestone Cobblestone .

Ores[edit source]

The only ore in this layer is Iron Ore Iron Ore .

Muddy Layer icon.png

The second layer counting down, just below the Dirt Layer and above the Ice Layer. Contains Copper Ore Copper Ore , used for the Copper Armor.

Strategy[edit source]

This area is relatively easy as long as you come prepared, monsters would usually appear in the Ochre Calcite Mini Dungeons around the Layer in pretty large groups, but not outside of them, so take that to your advantage to get the copper armor before things go down hill.

You will know when you find the boss dungeon because it has a different background wall than the other mini dungeons that were to be found, these type of dungeons contain a huge amount of the highest level monster in the whole layer that spans across the entire map with occasional named monsters, which is a death wish to go without copper armor, or a good weapon drop from this layer.

Blocks[edit source]

The most common block in this layer is Muddy Dirt Muddy Dirt , with a middle layer of Muddy Dirt Muddy Dirt and a background of flesh walls. There are also patches of Rough Stone Rough Stone . Dungeon walls are made of Ochre Calcite Ochre Calcite and background block for the boss dungeon uses Carved Slate Carved Slate .

Ores[edit source]

On Normal Difficulty, the only ore in this layer is Copper Ore Copper Ore . On Nightmare Difficulty, the common ore is Cobalt Ore Cobalt Ore and the rare one is Bronzed Ore Bronzed Ore . On Hell Difficulty and beyond, the common ore is Crimson Ore Crimson Ore and the rare one is Vibrantium Ore Vibrantium Ore .

Boss[edit source]

Gath'ack the Soulgazer.gif

Gath'ack the Soulgazer Gath'ack the Soulgazer is the second boss of It Lurks Below. He is found in a dungeon at the bottom of the Muddy Layer after the player receives the quest "It calls from below".

He has three attacks. In order of damage from weakest to strongest, they are: small projectiles that go from his body in a ring, a large projectile, and a beam that causes block destruction. In Nightmare, Gath'ack increases speed and fires the eye-beams in a random, star-like pattern.

Strategy[edit source]

  • Make sure you clear the Dungeon area before challenging Gath'ack and save as many health potions as possible.
  • Make sure you pop several scrolls (Scroll of Blessing Scroll of Blessing , Scroll of Regeneration Scroll of Regeneration , etc).
  • The eye-beams have a range cap, if you stand at the other side of the room, you can avoid taking the intense damage.
  • Gath'ack fires the Eye-Beams after standing for a long time.
Note: Bosses are the same level as the monsters found outside of their room.

The fifth layer counting down, below the Slimy Layer and above the Fleshsore Layer.

Strategy[edit source]

Beware the Wisp Wisp , they fly through walls and have a strong short range attack and split on contact into three smaller wisps. Currently, there is a bug that causes wisps to not split up if they are inside a wall when splitting. This can be exploited by standing next to a wall or a closed door. Spindly Trooper Spindly Trooper teleport around randomly. Moving inside halls or spaces that are only two blocks high will prevent the troopers from teleporting there, because they are too tall.

Blocks[edit source]

The most common block of this layer is Ichor Dirt Ichor Dirt , which contains patches of Dark Cobblestone Dark Cobblestone . Dungeon walls are made of Rusted Miniblocks Rusted Miniblocks and background block for the boss dungeon uses Soft Scatterbrick Soft Scatterbrick .

The Corruption of It is a biome located on the surface

  • It starts off small and continues to grow until Commander Vile Commander Vile has been defeated
  • It continues to grow during Invasions
  • It is notable for its meaty vegetation such as eyeball plants and horns growing out of the ground
  • The ground is a red meaty texture, and can only be mined with the Divine Pickaxe Divine Pickaxe .

NOTE: If Commander Vile is not killed, the corruption will eventually cover 80% of the surface, making it hard (for most classes) to go down below or back to surface.
