Where it all begins.[edit source]
The surface of the world of It Lurks Below. On world creation, some Cobblestone and
Iron Ore usually spawns such that it is accessible straight from the surface. This layer does not refresh when using the World Book, and so it is advisable to not waste resources found on this layer. They are sold at the
General Store , but only in small quantities and buying from the store is cumbersome and costly. Trees are a sustainable resource of
Wood , granted you do not dig up the saplings and forget to replant them.
On the surface, there are two biomes: Normal surface and The Corruption of It. At night, monsters spawn around the surface. However, after you defeat Commander Vile , they will no longer spawn. On the other hand, there is a small chance that at any time an Invasion will happen, spreading IT's corruption and making your NPCs temporarily inaccessible.

Boss[edit source]
Commander Vile is the first boss in It Lurks Below. He is found in The Corruption of It biome on the surface. Defeating him is part of the Tutorial Quests.
Strategy[edit source]
- Commander Vile is very difficult to outrun, but you can prepare a column to block him, and make a hole to safely shoot through.
- This strategy works with
Sword and Shield and
Dual Swords as well.
- Using a
Scroll of Blessing may also help mitigate the danger.
Rewards[edit source]
Commander Vile drops a random quality weapon on death, proportional in strength to the player's level.

The first layer counting down, just below the Surface and above the Muddy Layer. Contains Cobblestone , which is used in crafting low level Runes, and
Iron Ore , used for the Iron Armor. Since this layer does not refresh when using the World Book, it is advisable to not waste resources found on this layer. They are sold at the
General Store , but only in small quantities and buying from the store is cumbersome and costly.
Strategy[edit source]
Monsters here do not possess any special movement abilities and do not break blocks (on Normal Difficulty, that is). The most dangerous monsters in this layer are the Frost Imp and the
Skeleton . Frost imps fire ice projectiles that can sometimes stun-lock a player in place, leading them to a quick and frustrating death. Skeletons use a shotgun type weapon and inflict a very high amount of damage, especially at short range.
Blocks[edit source]
The most common block in this layer is Dirt , with a middle layer of dirt blocks and a background of nothing. There are also patches of
Cobblestone .

The second layer counting down, just below the Dirt Layer and above the Ice Layer. Contains Copper Ore , used for the Copper Armor.
Strategy[edit source]
This area is relatively easy as long as you come prepared, monsters would usually appear in the Ochre Calcite Mini Dungeons around the Layer in pretty large groups, but not outside of them, so take that to your advantage to get the copper armor before things go down hill.
You will know when you find the boss dungeon because it has a different background wall than the other mini dungeons that were to be found, these type of dungeons contain a huge amount of the highest level monster in the whole layer that spans across the entire map with occasional named monsters, which is a death wish to go without copper armor, or a good weapon drop from this layer.
Blocks[edit source]
The most common block in this layer is Muddy Dirt , with a middle layer of
Muddy Dirt and a background of flesh walls. There are also patches of
Rough Stone . Dungeon walls are made of
Ochre Calcite and background block for the boss dungeon uses
Carved Slate .
Ores[edit source]
On Normal Difficulty, the only ore in this layer is Copper Ore . On Nightmare Difficulty, the common ore is
Cobalt Ore and the rare one is
Bronzed Ore . On Hell Difficulty and beyond, the common ore is
Crimson Ore and the rare one is
Vibrantium Ore .
Boss[edit source]
Gath'ack the Soulgazer is the second boss of It Lurks Below. He is found in a dungeon at the bottom of the Muddy Layer after the player receives the quest "It calls from below".
He has three attacks. In order of damage from weakest to strongest, they are: small projectiles that go from his body in a ring, a large projectile, and a beam that causes block destruction. In Nightmare, Gath'ack increases speed and fires the eye-beams in a random, star-like pattern.
Strategy[edit source]
- Make sure you clear the Dungeon area before challenging Gath'ack and save as many health potions as possible.
- Make sure you pop several scrolls (
Scroll of Blessing ,
Scroll of Regeneration , etc).
- The eye-beams have a range cap, if you stand at the other side of the room, you can avoid taking the intense damage.
- Gath'ack fires the Eye-Beams after standing for a long time.
- Note: Bosses are the same level as the monsters found outside of their room.
Rewards[edit source]
- First time he is defeated, he drops the
Bag of recipes .
- A chance to drop some high quality items, including unique items.
