Ancient Items are similar to class skills in other games. They give your character the power to teleport, heal, buff, stun, and so on, or provide unique passive bonuses. Each class has five unique Ancient Items that are slotted in a special action bar and activated with shortcut keys (changeable in the game options). They can be moved around the bar or stored in your inventory.
You gain your first Ancient Item from a tutorial quest. After that, you will be awarded a class-specific ancient item at levels 5, 10, 15 and 20. You can also find generic Ancient Items as drops, usable by any class, allowing you to customize your character build further.
Class-specific Ancient Items can be upgraded by spending gold to become more powerful and gain new properties. Generic Ancient Items can be upgraded by finding more of the same item.
At character experience levels, characters receive a Mythical Key of Unbinding to unlock one bound item. This allows players to unlock ancient items and place them in the shared vault. This allows for players to multi-class.
