Ancient items are similar to class skills in other games. They allow you to teleport, heal, buff, stun, and so on. Rather than being innate to your character though, they are items which must be slotted into your hotbar in order for them to be used. You gain your first Ancient item from a tutorial quest. After that, you will be awarded a class-specific ancient item at levels 5, 10, 15 and 20. These are the only ancient items which can be upgraded. But, you can find any other class' ancient items as monster drops. They will simply have a set upgrade level based on the rarity of the drop.

This means that you can mix and match a hybrid character based on the skills you find in the dungeon. It is not uncommon for high level characters to have most of their bar taken up by ancient items in an effort to craft the perfect build.

These ancient items can be found and used by any class, giving them passive skills. They can be upgraded by finding more than one of each item and stacking them in your inventory. Some are Common, some are Uncommon, and some are Rare.
